I really liked this article!

In fact a couple of weeks ago, before the Amazon fire, I was thinking "why can't we monitor more efficiently fire"? With all the satellites we have, why south Europe every summer has still to face new fires. We know the scenario by now, we have memorised it: "every July and August the killing combination of heat, strong winds and complete absence of rain, in places like Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece, makes "crazy people" wanting to start fires"! So, why can't we have little robots scan images of these areas 24/24?

yes, the article reminded me this time of the year again - more satellite imagery and strategic alert systems could be effective to minimize the impact of forest fire.

@justin

Justin, last year, a wild fire outside Athens Greece went initially un-noticed by the public administration. When they realised what was happening, they even sent some people towards the wrong direction, and more than 100+ people were burnt alive.

The day after the "massacre" a video was uploaded on Facebook by a driver filming "a crazy guy" starting multiple fires near the place that was destroyed by the wildfire.

A year later after the "massacre" politicians are still fighting about this wildfire on TV regarding the 100+ people that were burnt alive. But not a single soul mentioned that with a singe smartphone someone managed to capture a valuable information and probably find who was hiding before this dramatic event. We all know, it is not the terrorists, or the russian spies or the american spies that start these fires. It is just greek guys that want to build everywhere. So, a strategic alert system to minimise the impact of forest fires would more like start an unimaginable civil unrest in Greece....In any case we do need a strategic alert system. For now the new elected government has just put in place a system, that sends sms in order to inform citizens immediately about a fire.
